On the Trail of White Squirrels in Wakulla County
Reading through the brochure the ranger gave us as we entered Ochlockonee River State Park in Sopchoppy, I noticed a brief mention of the rare white squirrels in the park. “Patient park visitors may be rewarded with a glimpse,” I read aloud to the family.
No sooner had we stepped out of the car than I heard a squirrel’s call, and, looking up to find its source, spotted a white squirrel gleaming in the sun. My son had just picked up the camera, which already had the zoom lens on, and snapped this and many more pictures of the little guy seemingly posing for us.
After the photo shoot, the squirrel took off, and we never saw another during our time in the park.
