Consider a Fishing Vacation at Horseshoe, Florida’s Last Frontier

If you’re looking for a laid-back, peaceful vacation spot, consider Horseshoe Beach, on Florida’s Big Bend.  Located between Steinhatchee and the town of Suwannee, Horseshoe Beach considers itself “Florida’s Last Frontier”.  But don’t worry about the lack of something to do–especially if you fish!

The waters near Horseshoe Beach are uncrowded and the fish are always willing to bite.  If you enjoy backwater fishing, head south into the back of Horseshoe Cove or north towards Drum or Stuart Point, and look for both redfish and spotted seatrout.  If you prefer fishing the grass flats, head out to Marker #10 and make a drift to the south, tossing shrimp or artificial lures into the white sand potholes in the grass.  On the flats, expect to catch an easy limit of sea trout, as well as the occasional Spanish mackerel, bluefish, or even a cobia.  Offshore anglers leaving Horseshoe Beach will find good structure and lots of reef fish directly west of town, in about 40 feet of water. And if you’re at Horseshoe between July 1 and September 10, head north towards the Pepperfish Keys and do some scalloping.

Horseshoe Beach has two nice boat ramps and is very fisherman-friendly.  You can get bait and fishing supplies at either Horseshoe Beach Marina or the Florida Cracker Shrimp and Bait Co.  There are two good places to eat,  Horseshoe Beach Cafe and Lily Creek Restaurant.  Either will gladly cook your catch!
