Paddle Suwannee River Wilderness Trail: October 18-23, 2019–65 Miles and 6 Days
Florida’s Suwannee River is one of the great features of our Natural North Florida region. It flows from the Okefenokee Swamp in Georgia, over 200 miles to the Gulf of Mexico. It’s big, free flowing, has few hazards and is spectacular to view–and to paddle.
Sponsored by Paddle Florida, this trip is popular, not only for the beauty of the river, but for the easy paddling. The Suwannee River flows easily and is unobstructed by dams, rapids, or weirs. And there are several options, including shorter versions of the trip, shuttle services, and meals. There’s complete information about fees online HERE There’s also a detailed day-by-day itinerary HERE
The trip begins at Madison Blue Springs State Park at the confluence of the upper Withlacoochee River and the Suwannee River.
The Suwannee River Camps are spacious, protected from high water and bugs and overseen by Florida State Parks personnel. There are even showers with hot and cold water! Paddlers will have the opportunity to stay at several, as well as in lodging at State Parks.
Day Six includes a stop at Little River Springs Park and the opportunity go swim in one of our most beautiful springs
Your paddling adventure ends in the town of Branford, at the intersection of US19 and the Suwannee River. There, you’ll meet your shuttle to return to Madison (If you’re on the full trip. If you’re on a shorter version, you are responsible for your own transportation and shuttle.) Here, paddlers have the oppoortunity to take a dip in a small spring, and to celebrate a successful adventure at a BBQ.
